The Challenge: How do we provide more opportunities and visibility for women and non-binary musicians in New York City?
The AdHoc Solution: We solved the severe lack of performance platforms and networks in NYC that aligned women and non-binary musicians, specifically nurturing their often underrepresented work.
A space was needed to commission and encourage collaboration amongst their often bifurcated communities. We brought brands into the conversation organically without tokenization or objectification.
The Hum was a music discovery series created by our Production Director, Rachael Pazdan. These events were a notorious incubator that brought female and non-binary musicians together for one-night-only collaborations, many of which inspired full-length albums and international tours.
The Hum earned press from The New York Times, Time Out New York, Nylon, VICE, The Village Voice, Brooklyn Magazine, and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls.
The Hum was a natural entry point for sponsors like Glossier, Jameson, Madewell, Pilot Kombucha, and Boxed Water to show their solidarity with the female & non-binary music community.
This series was highly influential in the curator event/organizer world, and there are multiple programs in the world that exist because of the trail we blazed.
